Several hundred protesters took to the streets to rally against the new COVID-19 passport in The Hague on Saturday. The new regulations of the pass that was introduced on the same day make proof of vaccination, recent recovery or negative test mandatory for entering public venues such as cinemas, restaurants or gyms.
Protesters were chanting and dancing with signs reading 'Stop the medical apartheid' and 'an injection is not sexy'. A placard saying 'the injection equals gas chamber 2.0' compared the new requirements to the Holocaust.
The rally was attended by far-right party leader Thierry Baudet of the Forum for Democracy party (Forum voor Democratie).
“From today more than two million Dutch people are systematically excluded from our society,” he said in a speech. “This is going to split our whole society.”
The Dutch junior economic affairs minister Mona Keijzer was removed from office on Saturday after voicing doubts over the health pass in an interview she gave to the local newspaper De Telegraaf.
The Dutch government has justified the pass as necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 with the introduction of the rules tied to the relaxation of social distancing, and necessary capacity limitations, requirements for restaurants, cinemas, and other establishments.
